Cells need sugar for energy. We get sugar from foods called carbohydrates or "carbs". The body makes insulin (IN-sue-lynn) to get sugar into cells so cells can use it for fuel. Some people get diabetes because their bodies don't make enough insulin. That is called Type 1 or juvenile diabetes. Some people get diabetes because they eat too many carbohydrates or more than their bodies know how to use and they're not burning off enough sugar because they don't exercise enough. That is called adult onset or Type 2 diabetes. You might enjoy the HealthRock song "Diabetes".
